She imagined herself drowning along the tides of Sumendu Lake, down own into the depths of solemn solitude, splashing into the serenity of forever silence.

About This Quote

When people think about drowning, they usually imagine themselves being dragged down by the undertow of the ocean. However, in the world of Sumendu Lake in Kolkata India, drowning is a way of life. The lake is so deep that most people spend their whole lives there. The water is so deep that the only way to leave the lake is to drown.

A few months ago one of my friends was studying in Kolkata. She had to spend time in the city because her father was running for office in the elections. One evening while she was walking on top of a footbridge near the railway station, she suddenly felt herself being dragged under by an undertow.

People on the bridge ran towards her but when they saw that she wasn’t struggling to climb out they just turned around and walked away. They didn’t want to get involved with such a dangerous situation and it seemed like everyone thought that she had lost consciousness and would come up at any second. When she finally surfaced, she saw that many people were watching her from below and thinking that she had drowned.

They knew that if she were alive, she would be dragged back under by the undertow and they wouldn’t be able to save her before it happened again. It was only after a long struggle did they find her lying face-down on top of a rock sticking out of the water with her head resting on someone’s arm.
